Children of Hope in Haiti - Sponsorship FAQ's

Children of Hope In Haiti sponsorship program promotes and encourages activities that are in harmony with and in obedience to the teachings and spirit of the New Testament. 1 John 4:21 says, "And He, Christ, has given us this command: whoever loves God must also love his brother." The program was initiated and continues to operate in response and obedience to these teachings and to the great need of the children in Haiti.

  1. Will I Receive My Child's Picture?

Individual Sponsors will receive the child's name and picture. Periodically you will receive updated photos in order to see your child's development.

Special Needs sponsors will periodically be updated on the Program and its needs via the Coordinator.

  2. May A Group Sponsor a Child?

YES! Several children are sponsored by groups such as school classes, local units, and others. Groups may participate as Individual Sponsors or for Special Needs.

For groups, we recommend the following procedure:

    1. Designate one member of the group to serve as the official correspondent. Include this name and the group's name in all communications. Please inform us if the name of the correspondent changes.

    2. Send only one cheque, rather than cheques from individual members, for donations or special gifts.

    3. Letters to a sponsored child should come from one person who represents the group. We suggest that the same person write the letter each time, although everyone in the group may have input.

  3. How Long Should a Child be Sponsored?

Children are eligible for the Program as long as they are in school (incl. College and Special Training), and are not married. Because the children depend heavily upon us, we hope that every sponsor will continue until the child leaves the Program. If a sponsor cannot continue, however, Children of Hope should be notified immediately so that the child may be assigned a new sponsor.

  4. How Do I Send Payment?

Payments may be sent annually, semi-annually, or quarterly. This way helps to reduce administrative costs.

Cheques or money orders should be made payable to Church of God in Eastern Canada, and mailed to the address on the last page of the brochure. You will receive one receipt at the end of the year. All donations are tax deductible.

  5. May I Write My Child?

Individual Sponsors will receive the child’s name and picture, and may write their child preferably once or twice a year (e.g. birthdays or Christmas).

All correspondence should be addressed to your child and mailed c/o Children of Hope to the address listed on the last page of the brochure.

Please do not make promises such as, "We hope to provide a trip to Canada for you," or "Someday we will visit you." In most cases, these promises are difficult to fulfill and failure to follow through could be extremely disappointing to your child.

Any visits to sponsored children must be arranged through Children of Hope. The Coordinator will contact the Director of the Program in Haiti BEFORE your departure from Canada. The Coordinator reserves the right to read all correspondence, if needed, in order that no harm will be brought to persons in other countries as a result of well-intentioned but uninformed remarks. NO FUNDS, OR PROMISE OF FUNDS ARE TO BE INCLUDED IN CORRESPONDENCE TO A CHILD.

  6. Will My Child Write to Me?

If your child chooses to write to you it will be forwarded to the Coordinator who will in turn distribute to you immediately.

  7. May I Send Gifts to My Child?

Sponsors often like to remember their child at special times during the year, such as birthdays and Christmas. Since it is impossible to distribute money or gifts equitably among all children, however, we ask that you only send cards and letters. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery.

Please feel free to send cards or letters. Please DO NOT send gifts or packages.

All money received for gifts will be placed in a fund to distribute gifts equally among all children in the Program. In some cases, a child may have an emergency or special need. Children of Hope may alert sponsors of this need; however, you are under no obligation to respond.

  8. How will the money be used?

Children of Hope covenants with each donor to channel as much money as possible into direct assistance of sponsored children. Our policies require that management costs be kept to a minimum. Currently 94% of our donations go directly into the Program.

  9. How May I Participate?

Two types of sponsorship are available:

    1. Individual Sponsor – regular gifts provide long-term support for a specific child.

    2. Special Needs – specific gifts help with educational or medical needs of children in the community who are not sponsored.
